Prison Ministry Commission

A Mission of Mercy, Hope, and New Beginnings

The Prison Ministry Commission reaches into places most people prefer to forget—but where Christ is very present. It is a mission rooted in Jesus’ own words:

“I was in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25:36).

This ministry is about seeing beyond the crime and recognizing the person. It is about reaching out to those society has rejected, with the message that no one is beyond God’s mercy. In silence, behind bars, many souls await a second chance—and the Church, through this commission, becomes the face of that chance.

A Gospel of Forgiveness and Compassion

Jesus never turned away the sinner. He forgave the woman caught in adultery, dined with tax collectors, and welcomed the repentant thief into paradise. The Prison Ministry Commission follows this same path—bringing the Gospel of forgiveness and transformation into jails, juvenile homes, and correctional centres.

We believe that God’s grace can enter even the most broken spaces, and that every human being retains the dignity of being made in God’s image.

Key Works of the Prison Ministry

1. Regular Prison Visits:

Teams led by priests and lay volunteers regularly visit inmates to pray with them, counsel them, and accompany them spiritually. Bible readings, personal conversations, and reflections on God’s mercy often bring tears and healing.

2. Sacramental Ministry:

Many prisoners long for God and return to the sacraments after years of spiritual dryness. We offer opportunities for confession, Holy Mass, and spiritual direction, helping them reconcile with God and themselves.

3. Counselling and Reconciliation:

Professional and pastoral counselling is offered to help inmates deal with guilt, anger, fear, and trauma. Many have been abandoned by families. The ministry offers a listening heart and sometimes even mediates reconciliation with loved ones.

4. Skill Development and Rehabilitation:

We collaborate with prison authorities and NGOs to provide skill-based programs that prepare inmates for life after release. Literacy classes, craft work, and soft-skills training help restore a sense of purpose.

5. Support After Release:

Reintegration into society is difficult. The commission offers moral and sometimes material support for released prisoners. We help them find jobs, reconnect with families, and build a life rooted in dignity and honesty.

Ministry of Silence and Love

This ministry is not one of glamour—it is hidden, often challenging, and emotionally intense. But it is also filled with grace. Many priests and volunteers speak of how their own lives are touched and humbled by the sincerity, tears, and slow transformation of those they serve.

It is a ministry of presence, where words are few, but love is real.

We are not here to judge, but to remind every person:
You are not the worst thing you’ve done. You are loved by God, and His mercy is greater than your past.
