Salesian Missionaries of Mary Immaculate

The Institute of Salesian Missionaries of Mary Immaculate (SMMI) is born from the society of the Daughters of St. Francis De Sales of which it is the missionary branch. This society was founded in Paris on 15 October 1872, by the Abbe’ Henri Chaumont and Madam Carre De Malberg to live by and spread evangelical charity in the world. From the very first years of the society, the founder had awakened among the members a missionary enthusiasm which expressed itself in a guild of fervent prayer on behalf of non Christian women.

ASHANIKETAN CONVENT, Bhiloda

The house was opened on 12th January 1967. Rev. Fr. Espasa SJ invited the SMMI Sisters with the permission of the then Bishop Rt. Rev. Edwin Pinto SJ. The aim of the House was integral evangelization of the Adivasi people with special emphasis on women and girls. Sisters began their work by visiting the villages, staying with them, catechizing them. As the need arose they started the boarding and the Gruhini course for girls. Later on a dispensary was opened with emphasis on mother and child health programme. Today we have a boarding with 250 girls, and 25 girls in the Gruhini course. We have a dispensary with daily attendance of 60-70 patients. We work in 40 villages of the Bhiloda Taluka for the development and empowerment of women. Sisters also teach in their Girls’ Boarding and in St. Xavier’s School. We are actively involved in the parish activities and pastoral work.
